New high visibility lane striping being installed on I-15, I-80, and US-91 in Sardine Canyon this week

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will be busy installing new freeway lane striping designed for high visibility and reflectivity in three different counties over the next week. 

Crews will be working in Salt Lake, Weber and Box Elder counties over the next week installing new contrast striping, which includes a white line followed by a black line. This more clearly distinguishes the striping from the lighter colored concrete. The new special adhesive tape, known as “tiger tail” striping, is embedded in the road, so it can’t be scraped up by snow plows as easily. 

The effort is part of the largest lane striping project in state history. 

“Our goal is to help everyone on our roads to see the lanes when driving day or night,” UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras said. “Everyone should feel safe.”

UDOT crews typically place lane striping at night to reduce inconvenience to drivers. This work requires multiple lane closures and occasional ramp closures so crews can safely do their jobs. 

This weekend plan ahead for a series of overnight lane and ramp closures in Salt Lake County at night while crews install new lane striping:

• On the night of Thursday, June 13, lanes will be reduced on westbound I-80 from 1300 East to the interchange near the Spaghetti Bowl (the I-80/I-215/I-15 interchange). 
• Then on Saturday, June 15, the lane striping crew will move to northbound I-15 from the Spaghetti Bowl to 1300 South. During this time, lanes on I-15 will be reduced and the ramp from westbound I-80 to northbound I-15 as well as the eastbound SR-201 to northbound I-15 ramps will be closed. The westbound I-80 collector ramp to northbound I-15 will be closed Saturday night as well for lane striping.
• On the night of Sunday, June 16, lanes will be reduced on northbound I-15 from 7200 South in Midvale to 5900 South in Murray.  During this time, local on and off ramps may be closed while the lane striping crew continues work. Follow all posted detours, and take alternate routes when possible.

Crews are nearly done placing this new striping on I-15 from Brigham City to Ogden, and work is scheduled to start in Sardine Canyon on US-91 next week. UDOT also plans on installing the new lane striping in Davis, Tooele and Summit counties on sections of I-15, I-215, I-80 and SR-201 through the end of the year. 

Even though UDOT crews continually work to maintain lane markings, weather and snow plowing are hard on reflective markings. Utah’s lane striping sees problems from extreme wear through salt in the winter and extreme heat in the summer. 

The state is dedicating more and more resources every day to improve visibility on Utah’s roads. In 2023 the Utah Legislature allocated $6 million per year toward lane striping efforts. This is in addition to maintenance funds as well as UDOT’s $26 million Enhanced Lane Striping Project (currently underway in Salt Lake County).
