UDOT repairing sinkhole off Interstate 15 in South Jordan

Sinkhole caused by failing drainage pipe
The Utah Department of Transportation urges drivers to plan for delays in South Jordan while crews repair a sinkhole on 10600 South.

Traffic is restricted to one lane on westbound 10600 South I-15 to 400 West, with additional restrictions through 700 West from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. during repairs. These lane closures will remain in place through Saturday afternoon as crews replace 42 feet-worth of damaged pipe. Two lanes will remain open at night.
UDOT crews noticed a small hole on the shoulder and far right lane of the road a few weeks ago, and quickly made a plan.
“Safety is our top priority. That’s why we have the inconvenience of the traffic control right now,” UDOT Roadway Operations Manager Jake Brown said. “But this is a priority for us to get fixed, due to the heavy rains coming. We want to make sure the road is safe”
A larger sinkhole on this same pipeline happened in August 2023 just down the road to the east.
Brown explained that pipes often rust from the bottom upwards, especially when experiencing increased moisture. When pipes eventually collapse, the road can be compromised as well, which often results in a sinkhole. This kind of deterioration is difficult to track, but crews had noticed a depression in the road and were monitoring it.
“We’re always looking for different things as we’re traveling down the road and maintaining our roads,” Brown said. “If we see any problems whatsoever, we immediately pull over and investigate, make sure there is not a problem or do a temporary fix, and get a permanent fix planned.”
Crews have been working since Monday to fix the road.
