UDOT advises drivers to expect overnight delays in Parleys Canyon

Lane striping crew to close eastbound and westbound I-80 and ramps this week

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Sept. 8, 2025) — The Utah Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers in Parleys Canyon to plan ahead for delays and closures as the lane striping crew continues to apply new reflective stripes on Utah’s roads.

Map of Enhanced Freeway Striping project taking place throughout the state of Utah

On Monday, Sept. 8 at 11 p.m. to Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4 a.m., crews will close eastbound I-80 where  it splits left to Parleys Canyon and towards Cheyenne. As a detour, eastbound drivers will be routed to southbound Interstate 215, then to 3300 South, where they can turn to get back onto eastbound I-80.

On the same night the striping crew will be working farther up the canyon, near Mountain Dell Golf Course and spanning to just before Kimball Junction, with I-80 reduced to one lane. Additionally, I-80 will be reduced to one lane near Kimball Junction to theI-80 and US-40 (Exit 146) interchange, where another project will be installing rumble strips.

Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 11 p.m. to Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4 a.m., westbound I-80 will be closed at Exit 130 through 2600 East for more lane striping. Westbound traffic will be routed to southbound I-215, then to 3300 South, where signal timing will be adjusted to allow drivers to return to westbound I-80.

These closures will allow crews to install “tiger tail” or contrast striping, which includes a white line followed by a black line for the lines in between lanes. In addition to being easier to see, the contrast is helpful for autonomous vehicle sensors and cameras.
