Cedar Breaks, Monte Cristo and East Canyon seasonal roads scheduled to open

The Utah Department of Transportation will open several seasonal roads this week.
State Route 148 in Cedar Breaks National Monument opened this morning. And crews are working hard to open two other seasonal roads by Friday morning, May 16. SR-65 from East Canyon to Emigration Canyon and Monte Cristo Highway (SR-39) are scheduled to be open by 8 a.m. Friday.
Guardsman Pass (SR-190 and SR-224), which runs east from Brighton to Park City, is scheduled to open the morning of Thursday, May 22.
Due to their high elevations, these seasonal roads can be hit with extreme snowfall in a matter of hours. When UDOT closes these highways, they remain out of service until at least spring.
Winter maintenance on the roads is expensive and because of the chances of a swift, incoming heavy snowstorm, motorist safety is a concern during the winter months. Seasonal roads typically close from late November through May, but sometimes heavy snow forces closures to last longer.
Wolf Creek Summit opened in late April. To check the status of all of UDOT’s seasonal roads, visit udottraffic.utah.gov/seasonalroads.
