UDOT narrows down options for Kimball Junction area environmental study

Public invited to provide feedback on study’s latest report
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) announced refinements to the transportation alternatives advancing for further study for the Kimball Junction area in Park City.
After evaluating feedback received from previous open houses and comment periods, the Kimball Junction study team has worked to make adjustments and refine the proposed alternatives (potential transportation improvements). Three alternatives were evaluated in two levels to either eliminate them from further consideration or carry them forward for further evaluation in the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) process.
“We have worked for over a year reviewing technical and traffic data, as well as feedback from the public and our agency partners to help us improve the proposed alternatives to minimize impacts to the surrounding environment and the Kimball Junction community,” UDOT Project Manager Becky Stromness said. “These refined alternatives are an important milestone in the process to find a transportation solution that will be of long-term benefit to this area.”
UDOT refined the concepts that the public reviewed in spring 2023 The study team evaluated each alternative using a multi-level screening process to meet growth assumptions and 2050 traffic projections for the Kimball Junction area. Two alternatives (A and C) are being moved forward for detailed analysis by UDOT in the Draft EIS:
- Alternative A includes a split-diamond interchange configuration on I-80 with intersection and pedestrian/bicycle improvements on SR-224.
- Alternative C offers a variety of road improvements, along with pedestrian/bicycle improvements on SR-224.
More details on the proposed alternatives can be found on the study website, along with a video summary. No final decisions have been made. The study team will continue to meet with stakeholders to review the refinements and the next steps of the study.
UDOT is asking for public input on the screening process, the initial impact analysis in the report, the alternatives advancing for detailed evaluation in the Draft EIS, and any new options the community would like UDOT to consider. Public comments will be accepted online, via email, voicemail, postal mail and text message through March 27, 2024. A public hearing will be scheduled once the study team releases the Draft EIS later this year.
