UDOT to close 4700 South at Bangerter Highway for up to one year

East-west travel at the intersection to close as crews work to build new interchange and remove one more stoplight on the highway

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) urges drivers and pedestrians to plan ahead for a year-long closure of 4700 South at Bangerter Highway on the West Valley City and Taylorsville border.

The closure is scheduled to begin as early as 9 p.m. on July 12, and will allow crews to safely construct a new freeway-style interchange at 4700 South. Bangerter Highway will move underneath 4700 South when construction is complete.

For more than a decade, UDOT has been working to eliminate stoplights on Bangerter Highway by converting intersections into interchanges. In addition to 4700 South, UDOT is building interchanges at 9800 South, 13400 South and 2700 West.

During the 4700 South closure, Bangerter Highway will remain open in both directions. The traffic signal at 4700 South will be removed permanently but right turns will still be permitted. Local drivers and pedestrians have several options to get around the closure, including the 4100 South or 5400 South intersections (see maps below for details). More information on the closure area and alternate routes is available at the project website.

Drivers should expect travel delays and are encouraged to slow down and follow all detours when traveling in the work zone.

Bangerter Highway is one of the valley’s largest north-to-south corridors, moving an average of 60,000 vehicles per day. Removing stoplights and converting all intersections into freeway-style interchanges will enhance safety and help keep traffic moving in the ever-growing west side of the Salt Lake Valley.
